Packing for a move is always stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. Whether you’re moving in the same state or across the country, some packing tips will make your transition much smoother.

This article covers packing tips from start to finish and includes topics like don’t empty your dresser drawers, leave your clothes on the hanger, put your linens, towels, and other soft items to use.

Pack for Move

Don’t Entirely Empty Drawers

Begin by removing the drawers from a dresser and using packing materials like bubble wrap to secure them inside the dress as you would potential breakable items?

Wrap the drawers in a dresser with plastic wrap, and then either pack them or leave them so you can quickly put them back together when you get home.

Hang Your Clothes on Hangers

Hangers should be used instead of folding clothes, as this makes them less likely to get wrinkled in transit.

Utilize your linens and towels- To protect delicate items like lamps and vases, wrap them in linens to provide cushioning.

To protect fragile things like plates or glasses wrapped your breakables in socks for protection.

Ensure to pack up all knives and other sharp objects in dish towels, securing them with an elastic band.

Use Pots to Pack Small Items

Instead of forgoing boxes and packing expensive kitchenware in jars, use empty containers, think of large Tupperware or a Ziploc bag to pack your spice collection.

For liquids, wrap the containers in plastic wrap so they won’t leak when transporting. –

To prevent spills during your transit, use wrapping to secure soap, shampoo, and other items that can spill as you pack.

Pack Your Suitcases

Heavy items usually need to be left behind when moving overseas, so they will need to fit into suitcases. As much as we hate to admit it, suitcases make for the best packing material when moving.

Label Boxes

Organize your labeling of boxes by assigning a color to each room. Label the contents in whichever order you choose, but be sure all boxes with the same color are together and easily distinguished from other colors.

This makes it easy to find items fast during unpacking and helps you avoid sorting through unnecessarily large masses of boxes at once.

In addition, you’ll never really have to figure out what to give away this way because the marker is always easily available.

Take Pictures of Your Moving Box Contents

After packing up all your belongings, take a photo to remember where everything is when you pack it.

Also, be sure to pack a list of everything you want to take. This list will help make the packing process smoother and may even prevent you from forgetting some essentials.

Take an in-depth photo of the back panel on your TV- It can be challenging to remember where all of those wires go.

So, take a picture of connections on the back of your TV, so you know how to connect them later.

Put Together Essential Tote

Prepare a duffel bag or suitcase with the items you need while moving and those immediately following.

As you move, pack things like medications, chargers, important documents, and toiletries (simple first-aid kits that will keep your family healthy).

After unloading in your new home location, prioritize unpacking essentials like clothes and dishes.

Get Free Boxes

Research, your nearest community for free boxes to use instead of purchasing new ones. Occasionally, you can find someone who’s moving too soon and is eager to get rid of their old boxes.

It’s also a good idea to collect as many boxes as you can before moving day.

Here are some places you can go to find boxes in your nearest area

Online – Many people may be interested in retrieving their old boxes from the moving process. One way to minimize the stress of moving is to reuse boxes.

Common Household Retailers

Retail stores such as Walmart, Target, and Best Buy all carry a variety of large boxes that can be helpful when moving out of state.

Grocery Stores

Pack a few extra boxes from your local grocery store.

Clothing Stores

One way to save a bit of money is to shop for small boxes at your local clothing store. Usually, they’ll have some in the back you can take with no charge.

Office Supply Stores

Office supply retailers often distribute free cardboard wrapping paper. In addition, they may be able to pull some things from the back of their store for you.

Moving Day

Moving day is exhausting and stressful. Here are some hacks to make you move faster when moving to another state.

Pack A Cooler

Consider taking an easy-to-grab cooler with you. Pack it with drinking beverages, quick snacks, and other items that can help keep your energy up throughout the day.

When packing, if you’ll be transporting your belongings within the state to avoid costly long-distance moving fees, pack them in the car and not a moving truck.

Be Packed Up the Day Before Moving Day

If you have any last-minute items to pack, it can mess up your entire moving day. So instead, pack as much as you can before your movers arrive – ideally, everything.

This way, you can focus straightaway on the important task at hand.

Conclusion

If you want to make sure that your move is as easy and efficient as possible, it’s important to think about what needs packing the most.

We recommend starting with clothing because they are usually the heaviest items in a household.

You may also need to pack smaller electronics like chargers or laptops separately to don’t get ruined by other heavier boxes.

Finally, if you have any valuables such as expensive jewelry or artwork, be sure not to forget those.
