Neutral Nursery Themes to Decorate a Nursery for a Boy or Girl

Looking for some decorating ideas for a nursery? You’ve come to the right place. Here is a collection of theme-based ideas for a variety of themes you can use to decorate a baby’s nursery which can be used for a boy or a girl.

So, the baby you’ve been dreaming of is finally on the way. What better way to get prepared than planning for and decorating a nursery? A nursery will become a very important part of your baby’s life (and yours too.)

Even if you prefer to keep the baby in your room initially, the nursery is the space that the child will start recognizing as his own. Make a space that is functional, as well as visually pleasing, and stimulating for your baby. A place that your baby will love to explore.

Here is a collection of neutral nursery themes and decorating ideas to get you started!

Color Based Themes

Traditionally, pink and blue are baby colors; however, you can always be creative. Also, babies usually prefer brighter colors. Try a red and black combination, or an assortment of bright colors.

Different shades of blue and green are also soothing and relaxing. Another option is yellows and oranges, giving a sunny and bright look. Browse images online for more ideas on colors and combinations.

Winnie the Pooh Theme

Frame all the Winnie the Pooh characters and hang them on the wall in a row. Collect various Winnie the Pooh stuffed toys and place them around the room. You can also get a Winnie the Pooh wallpaper strip and glue it around the nursery.

Find Winnie the Pooh party paper plates and use them to create an interesting decoration for your wall, by gluing them to the wall in a row.

Noah’s Ark Theme

Create a small toy ark with a cardboard box, cardboard, paper, and paint. Fill it with various pairs of stuffed toys. You can also make a mobile by suspending pairs of toy birds from a coat hanger, or two sticks tied together at the center perpendicularly.

Paint the walls in different shades of blue to show a sea. Collect pairs of animal-face-shaped pillows for your baby.

Butterfly Theme

Find butterflies in a craft store that you can attach to the walls, curtain rails, cupboards, and in different places in the room. Use a variety of bright and vibrant colors in the nursery. Keep the walls plain so that it balances the amount of color in the room.

Use multi-colored or a variety of different colored rugs in the room. Look for butterfly-printed curtains or just fabrics with vibrant colors. You can also cut out butterflies on cards, fold them in half, and glue the center alone on the wall for a 3D effect. Glue many different-sized butterflies in one corner for a beautiful effect.

Here are instructions for making a beautiful felt butterfly mobile that any baby is going to love.

Disney Theme

This is one theme that your child will love and appreciate as they grow older. Look for Disney stickers in a toy store to use for the walls. Keep a collection of Disney storybooks on one shelf.

Collect various Disney stuffed toys and use them to decorate the room. Buy large single-colored or transparent plastic boxes in which you can store toys, clothes, etcetera. Use Disney stickers to decorate them.

Prince or Princess Theme

Your child may not be royalty, but you can easily make them feel like a prince or princess. Decorate the walls with stickers or stencils.

For a girl, you can include images of castles, princesses, and horses. A boy might prefer princes, dragons, and knights.

Drape satin around the bottom of the crib or day bed to give it a majestic feel. Use lace and satin in your curtains. Decorate the lights with tulle and satin ribbons.

For a final touch, dress up your baby in a pretty princess dress, or prince outfit take a picture, enlarge it, and frame it. Make a beautiful name board for her door.

Moon and Stars Theme

This is another easy-to-do theme to decorate a baby’s nursery. Find some star print fabric to use for curtains, bed sheets, etcetera. Use moon and star-shaped cushions in various places in the room.

For a creative wall piece, take black paper, paint in the rhyme “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” and then use moon and star stickers to decorate it – frame it in a silver frame. Use glow-in-the-dark moon and star stickers on the walls and ceilings.

Tissue Pom Pom Theme

Here’s another great idea for a DIY (do-it-yourself) nursery that your baby will enjoy. Make a set of pom pom balls with tissue. Use a couple of complementary colors, or even a variety of vibrant colors like red, bright pink, or bright blue.

Hang them at different places in the room. Hang a few together in one corner of the room for a beautiful effect, or scatter some on the floor. Pom poms are big and colorful, and babies love watching them.

Tips and More Decorating Resources

As you decorate your baby’s nursery, keep in mind a couple of things. Use materials that will be easy to keep clean and dust free. As babies become older and start crawling, make sure to keep all small parts out of reach. The nursery should be a safe place for your baby.

Babies may not appreciate a theme-based idea, but as a child grows older they may start enjoying the theme-based space you have created. So plan a theme that will stimulate your child, as well as provide a safe and comfortable place to be in.

You can find materials to decorate your nursery at the local toy store or craft store. For more DIY decorating ideas for a nursery, read “Decorating Ideas for a Frog-Themed Nursery.”
